Ethel Milliken Holi Celebration

APRIL 17, 2023 — Holi is a popular celebration amongst the students at Ethel Milliken School. Because staff happily welcome many newcomers and families who celebrate Holi, they felt it was important to share this amazing tradition as a school.

The entire population at Milliken participated in the Colour Festival, which is part of the popular Hindu Festival. The Hindu festival celebrates spring, love and welcoming a new life. This festival is very colourful, providing an environment to let loose by singing, dancing and throwing colour powder paint and coloured water.

Battle of the Books

APRIL 17, 2023 — Battle of the Books is a friendly competition in which students compete against each other using their understanding of 10 selected books. The goal is to read all 10 books among the team members; however, each individual is not required to read the total. How many books each member reads will depend upon the member's reading speed, reading level and interest in the books. Teams will perform better if each book has been read by at least two team members. The reading begins in the fall and continues until the competition. The teams meet regularly to practise.

Learning Michif and Cree

APRIL 4, 2023 -- Cassandra Rieger’s Grade 4 students at George Lee School have had the good fortune of spending a significant amount of time this school year with Elder Lewis. She accompanied them to Treaty 4 Days and has taught them many words in Cree and Michif. Cassandra and her students always look forward to spending time with Elder Lewis and learning from her.

Recently, Elder Lewis created a Bingo-style game where the students used their previously learned words in Cree and Michif and learned some new words and numbers to 10 as well. They had an amazing time!

Thank you so much to Elder Lewis for her dedication and time spent in sharing her vast knowledge and beautiful culture and language!
